Whether it’s your first time in counselling or you’ve been going to counselling for a while, a little clarity goes a long way.
Every counsellor has their own areas of interests and specializations they work with. Here are my areas of interests for individual counselling:
- Substance use and addiction, both individuals struggling with addiction and loved ones caring for an individual struggling with addiction
- 2SLGBTQ+ issues, including polyamory and non-monogamy, hormone readiness assessments, and surgical readiness assessments
- Personality disorders and trait challenges – both individuals with these conditions and those who have loved ones with these conditions
- Dissociative disorders and complex trauma, either suspected or formally diagnosed
- Chronic passive suicidal ideation that has not resolved with psychiatric treatment
- Grief and loss, especially those who have lost a loved one to suicide
- Intimacy and relationship challenges for all different types of relationship and family structures
- Bipolar disorder and depression – improving quality of life and using psychosocial approaches to manage these conditions
- Sleep challenges and insomnia – I use the cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia (CBTi) protocol
- Disability justice and systemic oppression – navigating stigma, discrimination, and related issues
- Religion and spirituality, including navigating intercultural issues
- Voice hearers and vision seers – individuals who have had experiences labelled as psychosis
- Self-harm, sometimes referred to as non-suicidal self-injury
I primarily utilize the following therapeutic approaches: Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), general psychiatric management (GPM) for borderline personality disorder, and internal family systems (IFS).
